With the increase presence of terrorism matching rapidly, one question has been raised. Has globalization increased or decreased terrorism?
The answer differs, however the one thing that most security experts agree on is that terrorism seeks to undermine world peace.
Terrorism has been described as a weapon used by the weak to make gain or make a statement. Some terrorist groups argue that globalization has harmed them and their communities culturally.
Our question is , how are terrorists groups funded and how are they interconnected among themselves? Example Al Qaeda in Syria and Yemen, Boko Haram in Nigeria and Al shabab in Somalia

In the past 90 days, there have been 2 separate events that captivated the attention of the international community. The abduction of over 200 girls in Nigeria by the Islamist terrorist group Book Haram and the release of US Sgt Bowe Berghal by the Taliban.
ReplyDeleteBoth the Taliban and Boko Haram have been name terrorist organization by the US State Department. So the question is how and were do these organization get their support, including financial?
There is a saying that "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". Some analysts suggest that terrorism involves threatening, injuring or killing innocent people. Remember 9/11? In a world of globalization, nearly every event or world events and the response to it have security implications.
Terrorism is one of the most complex and also most complicated phenomenon of our globalized world.
In Nigeria for example, Boko Haram has been fighting with advanced weaponry. Security analysts agree that funding for this organization is vast and varied and the only way to stop them permanently is to cut off their source of funds. Other Analyst argue that Boko Haram remains internationally backed.

Globalization has increased the awareness of terrorism in recent years. The news media has cast a larger net over the area of terrorism, exposing the world to the intricate terrorist groups that exist in our world. In many ways, this has been a positive occurrence. People are able to do more to help put a stop to terrorism. There are many more anti-terrorist groups than there have been in the past. As stated above, the kidnapping of over 200 girls in Nigeria has become one of the stories to dominate the news for weeks. A few years ago, this event could have gone almost unnoticed. However, because of the constant increase in globalization, news companies are able to bring to light many horrific events that happen more often than one would like to think. Massive amounts of support from the global public bring so much attention to this event that it is helping to bring the girls home.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, globalization can also help to increase terrorism. "Fans" of sorts are exposed to the behavior of the terrorist groups and they begin to idolize it. This is one way terrorist groups come to be funded. Supporters can send them supplies or weapon material. Also, terrorism can be unintentionally funded. Companies that make in home cleaning supplies or home products sell them worldwide. They can be bought legally by terrorists without the knowledge of the company. Some terrorist organizations may get help, supplies, or intelligence from other terrorist groups as well. It is a complicated business that we may never have a full understanding of, but either in a positive or negative way, globalization does play a role in terrorism.
How are terrorists groups funded and how are they interconnected among themselves?
ReplyDeleteMany people asked how those people funded themselves. Another question related to the last question, how does the globalization helps those groups? Also how does the globalization enhance the relationship between the terrorists? Globalization has increased the terrorism in many countries, especially in countries that has religious issues. One example for impact social media in terrorism is Twitter. Thousands of twitter accounts are supporting the terrorism and they are using the new media to publish their radical thoughts. In addition, those groups found that the social media is the best way to get support and fans from people who have the same orientation.
How has increasing globalization affected the popularity and recruitment numbers of various terrorist networks? Has increased Western presence, and in particular U.S. presence in the Middle East through military bases in Saudi Arabia, aid to Israel, and war with Iraq and Afghanistan, secret drone campaigns in Yemen and Pakistan increased anti-globalization sentiment throughout the Muslim world?
ReplyDeleteis the war on terrorism continue forever?Relations between America and the Muslim world, where its popularity has deteriorated?
ReplyDeleteGlobalization, which has contributed greatly to the expansion of the geographical area of terrorism, it has melted somewhat geographical barriers, and contributed to the evolution of technology and communication technology, which is exploited by terrorists to communicate and gather information about their goals, of places, institutions and people
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting topic choice. Terrorism has grown increasingly organized. Globalization has made the world smaller, interconnected. Terrorist groups have grown beyond physical and geographic borders. Technology has also made terrorism more intelligent. The war to counter terrorism is thus very costly and is now an important component of globalization.
ReplyDeleteJust today, a group of ten terrorist attached the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi (the largest city in Pakistan). The Pakistani military was able to kill the attackers, but doesn't globalised media publicity threaten the reputation of Pakistan? At the same time, how did these terrorists get security uniforms which they were wearing during the attack? Doesn't that point to some level of corruption in Pakistan?
ReplyDeletePakistan knowingly harbored Osama Bin Laden for years. The ISI is shrouded in controversy year after year. There was a report from the London School of Economics that claimed to provide the most concrete evidence yet that the ISI is providing funding, training and sanctuary to the Taliban insurgency on a scale much larger than previously thought.
DeleteToday in the Baluchistan province of Pakistan, which shares a border with the Sistan-Baluchistan province of Iran, a group of Pakistani Shiite muslim pilgrims were returning from a pilgrimage in Iran, and were attacked by terrorists. This shows that globalisation can also increase sectarian violence as well.
ReplyDeleteThere is a study says that «terrorist financing electronically» extremist groups often resort to the use of the latest technology, according to specific mechanisms for communication, and pass the information to be achieved the necessary funding, pointing out that the media is considered as a free lessons for extremist groups, especially beginners, starting from how to install a cocktails bottle , through how to make the parcel bombs, and the the way to certain types of manufacturing bombs and material «TNT» severe explosion.
ReplyDeleteTurning to the capabilities of the terrorists in the recruitment of electronic technologies in their operations, and their relationships through, this technical study shows that the financing of extremist groups are a system of procedures by which the transfer of funds from sources that are not necessarily illegal to carry out terrorist activities have implications for political, economic, social and security serious, and so different from money laundering operations designed to hide the true source of the funds derived from illegal acts, and legitimizing it, which is often a «money laundering» What are the financial source of funding for extremist groups.
Soraya Louis:
DeleteHow can the same processes of technologies and operations be used to counter terrorist organizations. If the financing of extremist groups is truly covered through money laundering, and has political, economic, social and security implications, than how can the structures in place to fight these groups not infringe political sovereignty?
This is an interesting point you make about the funding of terrorist groups. Very insightful how you compare terrorist funding to money laundering. Terrorist groups are nearly the opposite of any other international crime group. Other crime groups want the source of their funding and money to be kept secret. Terrorist groups, however, get their funding from legal international businesses. This makes them nearly impossible to shut down. It is quite brilliant when you think about it.
ReplyDeleteWorld poverty, illiteracy, and desperation have in many ways fuel terrorism. For people who face starvation each day and believe that they do not have much to live for, using themselves to make a point can seem like a life-marker, underscoring their existence and therefore making them a celebrated figure in their respective community.
ReplyDeleteTo avert situations like the one explained above, the standard of living of terrorism-prone communities must rise. Archbishop Desmond Tutu has gone on record in an interview with CNN to say:
““You can never win a war against terror as long as there are conditions in the world that make people desperate — poverty, disease, ignorance, et cetera.
He said the disparity between the rich and poor in parts of the world causes instability and insecurity.
I strongly believe that if the standard of living increased for Nigerians living in the northern part of Nigeria, for example, through created jobs, greater education, and introduced foreign finances, then you will see more young people fight against the impunity of Boko Haram.
To eradicate terrorism, the global community needs to get to the root of the issue. Many of the problems in the world stem from the ever-increasing gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots." Globalization is all about nations and people working together. I think the first step towards a world with less terrorism is a financial incentive for terror-prone areas that would increase the standard of living and encourage citizens to live with a purpose other than blowing themselves up.
As I wrote below to Abdulrahman, I do believe that these same illiterate, impoverished populations can be easily exploited by extremists who use the redefinition of Islamic terms and concepts for their own political, military and economic gains. Thus, I agree completely with you that in order to fight terrorism effectively, we need to root out extreme poverty first.
DeleteHowever, I would like to point out that we should not just attribute everything to poverty. For example, the 9/11 hijackers were not poor. They also held deeply-rooted ideologies of hatred so we must have a strong campaign of re-education as well.
Soraya Louis:
DeleteI don't think that terrorism should be attributed to poverty. I do believe however, that there is extremism, lack of tolerance and understanding just as there is a selfish need for power which transforms people and leads to all sorts of ideologies and movements. Terrorism isn't always motivated by poverty.
The global community and the media need to play a better part in explaining things as they are instead of labeling people, ethnicity and religions as the problem. Any extremist ideology is dangerous; spreading knowledge is an important component of solving this issue
The world needs to do a lot more in addressing terrorism. Although enhancing security measures assist in dealing with the crime, addressing the root causes like poverty, illiteracy and starvation will go a long way in curbing the problem

yes i agree eradicate terrorism, the global community needs to get to the root of the issue.
ReplyDeleteYes money laundering Help terrorism to growth

ReplyDeleteIn the begging we should be clear about the definition of terrorism, which does not mean that the jihad and the struggle of peoples for the protection of religious values and cultural sovereignty and independence, as well as know what you mean by globalization, which has contributed greatly to the expansion of the geographical area of terrorism, it has melted somewhat impediments of geography , and contributed to the evolution of technology and communication technology, which is exploited by terrorists to communicate and gather information about their goals, of places, institutions and people.
ReplyDeleteTerrorism also impact in humanitarian relief, because some of the organizations working in this field, exploited by people who have incompatible thought with the ideology and goals of humanity exclusive. So some countries such as the United States started to codify this regard to make sure that they not exploit by the terrorists in the globalization of terrorism.
World realized that it is heading towards the village of the global economic, through economic cooperation between the countries and to promote the accession to the World Trade Organization, which seeks to reduce economic barriers between Member States to build a global economy that would supports the world peace and prosperity among the peoples. But the September 2001 AD, was serious indication to exploit globalization to expand the base of terrorism.

I agree with you that terrorism cannot be equated with jihad. In Islam, jihad has a specific set of meanings, including person quest for God and self-defense. Neither of these meanings include the offensive attacks on innocent civilians to cause fear. Nevertheless, it is also true that many terrorist groups have exploited the ignorance or lack of education in some populations to re-define the term "jihad" to include terrorist acts. Can we doubt that this is case with AlQaeda and other offshoots of it?
DeleteI think that in the Quran jihad can be described as being a struggle for one's own self. However, the word jihad has been culturally appropriated by Islamic extremists. I think that through the Imams and the maddrassas, young boys have been brainwashed by those who seek war with the West. They memorize parts of the Quran in Arabic, a language they usually do not speak. These young men are indeed exploited, as are young minorities in America who are targeted by Army recruiters. This has been going on for centuries, young poor men fight old rich men's wars.
DeleteUnderstanding terrorism is considerably complex. It appears to be a trend that only the involved can explain as one may wonder what makes an individual involve in such extremist acts. With or without globalization, terrorism would exist, may be to a different level as it takes not the capacity of globalization to execute such acts but the desire for individuals to commit such heinous acts.

Can the media be blame for the increase in terrorist groups? Could it be that these groups are looking for televised fame so that in the eyes of many across the globe they could be intimidating. I think these terrorist are causing more harm to the innocent people of their country. As a result of these terrorists it has left many ethnic people stereotyped because of the actions of others. What would the world be like if there were no terrorists?
ReplyDeleteI dont think we can blame the media for the increase of terrorist groups it just contribute to it. I believe they are trained and brain washed to be better and badder than the group before them. I do agree that they are doing it for fame but there are other reasons why as well.
DeleteTechnology on a hold has helped to take this terrorist situation to a higher level in which terrorist can gain access to any part of the world. They cold set up a camera which could stream what they are doing to a victim globally. Has technology and it's increasing changes been aiding the terrorist in their plots to terrorized
ReplyDeleteAs long as technology improves terrorism will increase because it’s their outlet, it’s the best way they could hide and get away with crime.
DeleteBut, on the other side of that argument, wouldn't states' ability to track and fight terrorism increase as well? With advances in technology, particularly with the use of drones, has greatly increased our ability to target and attack terrorist groups. However, a horrible consequence to this has been the Obama administration's trigger happy attacks on residential areas of Yemen, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They have targeted American civilians as well as had immense collateral damage in the form of civilians being hit with errant drone strikes. This has likely increased the terrorist networks ability to recruit locals who have been negatively affected by the drones.
DeleteTechnology has helped terrorism reach a global status, as it has with any other aspect of life. For example, advocacy groups, human rights organizations, NGOs, businesses, and governments have all become more globally active and recognized with the help of technology. Any country with access to the internet can make anything public. In this way, it has been easier for terrorists to make their practices more well known. Social media and the internet make it simple for terrorist groups to gain more supporters. This is partially a fundraising technique. As long as there are humans on the Earth, there will be terrorism. Poverty levels can be brought down but that is not the only cause of terrorism. Terrorism occurs because there is evil in the world which is impossible to abolish. There may be ways to ameliorate the severity of terrorism but it is impossible to be completely victorious in a war on terror.
